Her run at the 2003 World Championship where she won the 100m gold medal and the 200m silver medal established her as one of the world’s finest sprinters who would be a threat in both events at the Athens Games. But this was not to be as she would not be joining the team at the Games as she was suspended for two years for taking a banned stimulant, nikethamide.
She is the reigning world champion in the 100 and finished second in that event at the US Olympic trials in July. She had qualified for the 100 and 200 metres and was expected to run on the 4x100 metres relay.
The sprinter contended that she was given glucose tablets by her physical therapist who did not know they contained a banned substance.
Her ban opens up a place on the team that will now go to twice-Olympic gold medallist Gail Devers, who finished fourth at the US trials.
