Toshiba and Sharp believe that TV viewers of the future will want much more than just 1,920×1,080 pixels on their TV screens. The two Japanese companies are getting ready to show consumers what tomorrow’s ultra high-resolution gadgets will look like at Japan’s Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (more commonly referred to as CEATEC) electronics trade show.
Toshiba is turning up to CEATEC with an ultra-thin Ultrabook (dynabook R631), the world’s thinnest and lightest tablet (REGZA Tablet AT700) and an impressively big autostereoscopic 3D TV with Quad Full HD resolution.
Toshiba’s REGZA 55X3 television (aka the 55” ZL2 in Europe), which will be launched in Japan in December, sports a huge 3,840x2,160 pixels resolution -- four times that of Full HD.
"The ZL2 is the world’s first TV targeted at consumers to include a Quad Full HD display," said Toshiba which "enables the ZL2 to offer a 3D viewing experience that can be enjoyed by multiple viewers and can display 2D content in four times (Quad) Full HD resolution."

Toshiba’s REGZA 55X3 TV provides glasses-free 3D viewing for up to nine different viewing positions by tracking the viewer’s actual positions in front of the screen with a built-in camera. The TV also comes with built in WiFi, DLNA, remote-control operation via iPhone and Windows 7 compatibility.
Sharp has also been hard at work producing a super-high four times Full HD resolution TV which it will unveil at CEATEC.
Sharp's prototype AQUOS 4K LCD TV measures in at a larger 60" but does not feature 3D capabilities. Sharp plans to release a consumer-ready model of the TV in 2012 but has not announced exact dates or pricing.
Toshiba’s REGZA 55X3 will be available in mid December 2011 in Japan. A spokesperson for Toshiba told Relaxnews that the European launch is scheduled for Q4 but no specific dates have been announced. Pricing is still being confirmed, said the spokesperson.

CEATEC is Japan’s largest IT and electronics trade fair. The event features new technologies from participating electronics makers and attracts around 800-900 exhibitors each year. CEATEC will run from October 4 to October 8 at Makuhari Messe in Tokyo, Japan.
