DMK leader TR Baalu has the rare distinction of being in three cabinets, none of which were DMK-led.

Elected to the 11th Lok Sabha, Baalu was Union Minister of State, Petroleum and Natural Gas and Non-Conventional Energy Sources between 1996-98, first under HD Deve Gowda government and then in the Vajpayee cabinet.

He was re-elected to the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998 and re-elected yet again in 1999 to the 13th Lok Sabha for a third term. Prior to DMK pulling out of the NDA alliance, he served as Union Minister for Environment and Forests.
His stint as a politician began in 1986 when he was nominated as Rajya Sabha member.
