TRADERS ON Express Road created ruckus and shooed away labourers engaged by the Kanpur Municipal Corporation to construct a modern garbage-dumping house. They even gheraoed officials.
About 1,100-metre stretch of the Express Road does not have a proper garbage-dumping place, resulting in littering of the road. Thus, during an inspection, senior KMC officials had directed the construction of a dumping house here.
When construction began on Express Road, traders assembled at the spot and virtually gheraoed junior engineer Jagdish Prasad demanding that work stop, as the construction of a garbage house near their shops, would adversely affect business.
However, KMC officials tried to pacify traders but in no mood to relent, the traders created a ruckus and forcefully stopped construction.
The infuriated traders then virtually shooed away the labourers, ensuring complete stoppage of the work. Finding no other option, the Kanpur Municipal Corporation officials also were forced to beat a retreat.
Meanwhile, several tehbazari contractors today met municipal commissioner Badal Chatterjee for clarifications.
They were confused over the present situation following a government order banning tehbazari in the State with effect from June 15. Interestingly, neither the officials, nor the administrator had issued any directives about realisation of tehbazari.
This has created problems for tehbazari contractors, as people were not willing to pay tehbazari after the State Government order.
