After clearing all administrative and technical hurdles, the e-challan project of Delhi Police will finally be rolled out next month.
The e-challan will replace the traffic policeman's age-old challan book. Through this handheld device, the police will be able to catch repeat offenders as the data fed in the device will be linked to a central data unit. There would be a record of all traffic violations against defaulting drivers and vehicles.
About a week ago, the traffic police had launched the final trial run of the project at five circles. On an average of 500 e-challans were issued daily in these five cirlces, said Taj Hassan, special commissioner of police (traffic).
The trial is on at Kalkaji, Mehrauli, Lajpat Nagar, Parliament Street and Chanakyapuri circles and would be extended to other parts of the city within a few days, the police said.
After a glitch-free operation in different weather conditions, Hassan is hopeful of implementing the project in the rest of the city soon.
Till recently, the project had faced several hurdles. Initially, technical glitches plagued its implementation and then administrative came roadblock, causing the project to miss its March deadline.
In January, the traffic police had initiated a trial by introducing some of the devices in Parliament Street area. But the e-challan devices developed technical snags due to sunlight. Once that problem was sorted out, the vendor (Airtel) was not ready with 1,200 e-challan devices and had sought more time. The final problem was, however, at home as the traffic policemen found learning the working of the project difficult.
