Tragedy strikes: 2 of marriage party killed in mishap

IT WAS supposed to be a happy day for Poornima Chauhan as she was getting married in Dewas on Thursday to Rakesh Jat who works in the MPEB. But tragedy struck in the form of a road accident on A B Road near AIR Tower in the wee hours that claimed her father Ratan Singh Chauhan (55) and her grandmother Sona who succumbed to injuries at the MY Hospital.

It also left 12 others injured. The marriage has been postponed. Poornima was not travelling in the vehicle as she had reached Dewas earlier.

The Chauhans live in Bajari village in district Barwani and they were going to Dewas in a Tempo Trax (MP-46-D-0122) for the marriage. The accident occurred around 4 am when a dumper coming from the opposite direction hit the Trax. Most of the 14 passengers in the Tempo Trax were sleeping at that time.

Ratan Singh, who is general manager at District Industries Centre, Ashok Nagar, died on the spot. Sona Bai was seriously injured with her ears bleeding. She died at the MY Hospital awaiting treatment.

At the time the injured reached the hospital – at around 4.30 am, the staff were sleeping. It took the authorities a lot of time to get things organised and attend to those injured. Three of the injured were taken to the Dental Hospital as they had broken teeth and jaws, while the remaining nine were being treated at the MY Hospital.
