About 50 passengers, express and goods trains plying between New Delhi and Amritsar were on Saturday searched by anti-sabotage teams and sniffer dog squads at the railway station in Phagwara in the wake of intelligence inputs of a possible terror strike.
Not wanting to take a chance after a threat reportedly issued by an unidentified terrorist outfit to target railway stations of Phagwara, Jalandhar, Pathankot, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Chandigarh, teams of GRP and police undertook an intensive search and combing operation at the railway station, officials said.
Assisted by anti-sabotage teams and dog squads, they put strategic places in the city under surveillance and frisked passengers on all trains between Delhi and Amritsar, officials said.
They had received inputs from intelligence agencies about a possible terror strike in the Ambala Railway Division.
The checking of trains, passengers and their luggage would continue, a Government Railway Police official Taranjit Singh said.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Sukhchain Singh Gill said the police were on high alert and as well as at other stations in the area in the wake of the threat.
