Overloading, improper protection and poor quality are the main reasons for transformers going kaput. Already, the Western Region Electricity Distribution Company has reduced distribution transformer failure percentage to 11.34 per cent as on December 26 against the national average of 23 per cent. In developed countries the figure stands at a mere 6 per cent.

The MP Electricity Regulatory Commission (MPERC) has set the Company a target of 6 per cent and 0.5 per cent for distribution transformer and power transformer failures respectively by 2009-10.

Superintending Engineer Ravi Tiwari points out that the Company is adhering to norms set by MPERC and “if things proceed in the same manner as they are happening at present and nothing unusual happens then this target would be achieved”.

Tiwari disclosed that distribution transformer failure rate for the financial year 2004-05 was 22.08 per cent which had been brought down to 11.34 per cent from April 1, 2005 to December 26, 2005. MPERC has set a failure rate target of 17.5 per cent for the financial year 2005-06, he added.

Comparing the figures with failure rate for power transformers in the Western Region Electricity Distribution Company Tiwari said this stood at 4.71 per cent during the financial year 2004-05 against the national average of 5 per cent.
