Life was badly affected in Tripura on Tuesday as the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-backed trade unions called a dawn-to-dusk transport strike to protest against the fuel price hike.

Buses and private vehicles went off the roads. Attendance in government offices, banks and educational institutions was poor.
However, vehicles engaged in essential services like milk supply were exempted from the strike.
The Indian government has raised the prices of petroleum products five times since it came to power in May 2004.
