In a bid to tap new customers, travel portals in the country are offering innovative discounts. While it may be exciting to throw caution to the air and jump at the freebies on offer, it would be wiser to read the fine print before you click the mouse.

Online portal MakeMyTrip, that started the competition by offering lowest airfare rates, has now extended the offer to hotel bookings as well. The new campaign promises that a hotel booking done through the portal will either cost a person the same as what one could get through direct booking or even cheaper in some cases. Just as was the case with airline bookings, MakeMyTrip promises to pay back double the amount in case someone finds a cheaper hotel fare.

"Our campaign is not a time-bound promotional scheme but a positioning statement," said Amit Saberwal, Vice President, Business Development Head, MakeMy Trip. The online travel trade is led by airline booking and there is confusion amongst customers when it comes to making an online hotel booking, Saberwal said, adding that the latter is yet to catch up.
