Top BJP leaders on Sunday adopted a resolution demanding that Taslima Nasreen be treated as a “political refugee in India with a right to live with dignity and security”.
They said she is entitled to all rights that have been given to the Tibetan refugees. “A victim of political persecution is being persecuted further since fellow travelling with fundamentalism wins vote banks. The irony of this issue is the customary silence of the Prime Minister and the Central government,” the resolution said.
The BJP leaders alleged a “complete breakdown of authority” of the Central government and the prime minister on matters of governance in Taslima case as well as violence carried out allegedly by the Marxist cadres in Nandigram.
They said the Congress leadership lacked guts to take on the Left on these issues as there were only two priorities before the UPA — to ensure its survival and perpetuate the politics of vote bank even if it endangers the national security and integrity.
Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani and BJP president Rajnath Singh were among the senior BJP leaders who attended the session. The BJP leaders alleged while the Centre and the Left government in Bengal were welcoming illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, “they have shut the doors on Taslima, a victim of political persecution, as part of vote bank politics.”
They saw a parallel between the eviction of Taslima and the enactment of a legislation to nullify the effect of the Supreme Court’s Shah Bano judgement in 1980s.
