A section of Brahmins may have responded to Mayawati’s repeated call to join her party, but they will not last long in it because of the cultural differences which they will find humiliating at one stage, feels a senior BJP leader. They may not be able to stomach the culture of servility that is said to be prevalent in the BSP.

Most politicians from the upper caste were attracted to the BSP because of the probability of its coming to power in UP after the State poll. But none of them would be able to withstand the cultural divide for long, said the BJP leader.

“By any calculation, Mayawati cannot win polls with just Dalit votes. Hence, she will have to reach out to upper caste if she is thinking in terms of making it to the CM’s chair once again. For this, it is necessary that she bring about a complete change in her personality,” feels another political leader.
