Truck driver Wahid Khan (27) died on the spot while two occupants of a Maruti Swift Dzire car were injured in the multiple-vehicle collision which took place on the Sector 31 flyover, police said.

The accident also triggered a one-kilometre long traffic jam on the highway disrupting movement. The police have registered a case against the driver of the water tanker who has been absconding after the incident.

The water tanker belongs to the expressway concessionaire company DSC Limited, which claimed the vehicle, which is used for watering plants along the road, was moving when it was hit by the truck.

The accident has raised concerns about safety measures on the stretch. In a similar incident in 2009, a management student died after his car rammed into a stationary truck on the expressway.

The spokesperson added that this time the truck hit the moving tanker at a high speed which led to the death of its driver.
