Apropos of Martin Jacques’ article Tampering with Tibet (March 18), the military crackdown on Tibetan protestors in Lhasa is condemnable. This exposes the dragon-like character of China against innocent people. The Lhasa protest is a result of the resentment of the Tibetan people under the present government of the Chinese occupiers of Tibet. To put an end to the ethnic war on its soil, China should introspect on its history.

New Delhi always had a policy of appeasing China by accepting Chinese sovereignty over Tibet and turning a blind eye to China’s territorial ambitions over Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin. History will not forgive India for betraying the Dalai Lama and peaceful Tibetans in their struggle to shake off the shackles of being under the yoke of the Chinese. We need to arouse the conscience of peace-loving people around the world and tell them of the plight of Tibetans under the subjugation of Beijing’s rulers.

It is ridiculous that Left Front leaders showed their unhappiness on the comments made by Western countries on Nandigram. They were agitated over these comments but have been mum about the violence unleashed in Lhasa. Leaders across the world have expressed their alarm on the gross violation of human rights against the Tibetans. But Indian communists say suppression of Tibetans is China’s internal matter. Can we look forward to our Left leaders to express indignation and urge China to respect the cultural rights of the Tibetans?
