Two transport officials were arrested for allegedly allotting fake registration numbers to stolen vehicles by the Kashmir Crime Branch in Srinagar, police said on Sunday.

Two transport officials were arrested for allegedly allotting fake registration numbers to stolen vehicles by the Kashmir Crime Branch in Srinagar, police said on Sunday.

"Motor Vehicle Inspector Muhammad Ashraf Wani from Pulwama, and Senior Assistant Registration Clerk of Regional Transport Office in Srinagar Iqbal Ahmad Bhat have been arrested under various sections of IPC for effecting a fraud and forged registration of vehicles," a police spokesman said.

The incident came to light when a resident of Baramulla district was found using a vehicle with a fake number, following which another case of the same nature surfaced, which revealed the involvement of the accused officials, the spokesperson said.

In a separate incident, Kashmir Crime Branch arrested two persons Abdul Rashid Sheikh and Abdul Razak Sheikh in Anantnag district for allegedly managing fictitious land records, the spokesperson said.
