Catering to the sentiments of Kasmhir and Jammu regions, government has decided to set up a central university each in the two provinces of the state, but dropped the proposal for setting up an IIM there.
The government had already decided to have a central university in the state, but it got caught in a controversy with both regions wanting the institute to be located in their areas.
Even chief minister Omar Abdullah had taken up the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, suggesting that the university could have two campuses.
"As a special case and keeping in view the regional aspirations, the government decided to set up two central universities in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. They will offer distinct courses in emerging areas of nano-technology, bio-technology and IT," HRD Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters today.
He said the proposal for having an IIM in the state has been dropped.
"There will be no IIM in Jammu and Kashmir. Given the constraint of resource, the money for IIM will be diverted for the purpose of central university," he said.
The Central University for Jammu and Kashmir was created along with 15 other universities under the Central University Act, 2009. However, the institute ran into trouble after both the regions of Jammu and Kashmir fought over the location.
