Police registered cases of rioting and stone-pelting against 50 unidentified people and detained two others on similar charges on Wednesday, a day after a Muharram procession in Bhilwara turned violent, leaving several people injured.
The violence took place in a part of the old city late on Tuesday in which some people threw stones at the police, injuring additional superintendent of police Jyoti Swaroop Sharma. The police then used batons to disperse the mob.
Thereafter, two people were detained and later formally charged with rioting and stone-pelting, the station house officer of Bhimganj, Tulsi Ram, said.
Narrating the turn of events, police said around 9 pm on Tuesday the Muharram procession at Old Kuthcery Road stopped briefly, leading to a traffic jam. When police asked the mourners to move on, a stone was thrown at Sharma, hitting him on one eye.
The police then resorted to lathi-charge and detained two youth at the Bhimganj police station for questioning.
This further angered the crowd, with the marchers stopping the procession for close to an hour, demanding release of the two men.

{{/usCountry}}The police, however, managed to get the procession to move on, but the mourners again stopped at the Tejaji Ka Chowk around 10.45 pm. The police then again caned some of the mourners who reassembled at the same place after a while.
Later, additional district collector Suresh Yadav and assistant SP Anand Sharma assured the gathering that a fair inquiry would be conducted into the violence. It was then that the procession resumed.
