The police detained two men on Wednesday evening for allegedly carrying five firearms and 23 live cartridges.
The police said that after preliminary investigations they suspect that the two had come to sell the weapons in the city.
“We suspect the duo had come from outside the city. It appears they wanted to sell the weapons in the city. We are interrogating them further,” said a police officer from Nehru Nagar police station.
“After reports of two terrorists having gone missing in the city in the festive season, we do not want to take any chances. We are taking the case seriously and are trying to find out if they were to meet anyone in the city.”
The Mumbai police had on Friday issued an alert regarding two suspected terrorists of foreign origin having sneaked into the city with an intention of causing disturbance during the festive season.
