A 19-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman along with two friends had entered the water at Hutt Gully, near the seaside town of Anglesea, 110 km southwest of Melbourne.

Around 6.20 pm AEST, a friend raised the alarm after seeing his companions - a male and a female - swept away in a rip at Hutt Gully, about two km west of Anglesea.

The pair had been wading in water with two other friends and were dumped by a wave and taken about 50 metres out to sea.

At 6.40 pm, the male student was pulled out from the water by a surf lifesaver and a paramedic, who worked to resuscitate him but he died a short time later.

A search involving the police, surf lifesaving volunteers and Torquay Rescue Service commenced to trace the female, whose body was later located around 30 metres from the shore.

Sergeant Bill Matthews told Australian Associated Press that the two were only in knee-deep water when they were swept away.

The two students have not yet been formally identified.

The bodies were taken to Melbourne and the police were preparing a report for the State of Victoria's Coroner.
