The government on Wednesday approved six special economic zone (SEZ) proposals, including two by information technology major Infosys, and extended the validity of the clearance in principle of Reliance Industries’ Maha Mumbai project.
Commerce secretary G.K. Pillai said promoters of the Maha Mumbai SEZ had been asked to cut the size of the SEZ to 5,000 hectares in accordance with the new rules. The validity of the approval has been extended by one year. The earlier clearance, which expired this week, allowed the SEZ to come up across 10,000 hectares.
A group of ministers looking at SEZs had in April year set a ceiling for a zone at 5,000 hectares.
On Wednesday, the board of approval took up eight SEZ proposals in its meeting. It, however, deferred two proposals from Adarsh Prime Projects and Blue Vision Construction.
Of the six proposals that were cleared, four were given approvals in principle while two received formal clearances.
Infosys has received the go-ahead for two SEZs to be set up near Hyderabad. The board has also granted approvals in principle to a 3,000 acre multi-product SEZ by Ispat Industries in Raigarh, Maharashtra. So far, formal approvals have been granted for setting up of 362 SEZs, of which 136 have been notified.
