Two persons were killed and three others injured in the Pakistani garrison city of Rawalpindi when an abandoned missile, buried beneath a shop, exploded on Friday.
The missile exploded when it was hit by a sharp instrument during digging in the site of a small shop near the city's food street, according to an eye-witness.
Private Geo TV said two people were killed and three others injured in the blast.
The injured were taken to the General Hospital in the city. The blast damaged the shop and walls of several nearby shops. Traffic was diverted to other routes as many people rushed to the site to shift the wounded to hospital.
The missile is one of many believed to be left of a huge blast in the ammunition depot of Ojhri camp in April 1988. The Ojhri dump had been used for stockpiling of heavy weapons during the campaign against Soviet forces in Afghanistan.
The entire dump was gutted in a day-long inferno during which dozens of people were killed as missiles rained down on citizen living in the heavily-populated areas around.
Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, who hails from Rawalpindi, also said missiles and rockets are still dumped in different areas of Rawalpindi, especially in places near the camp site.
