Two militants gunned down in J-K

Two hardcore militants belonging to Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Toiba were killed in separate gunfights with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Sunday.

Two hardcore militants belonging to Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Toiba were killed in separate gunfights with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Sunday.

A dreaded Harkat militant was killed in an encounter with a joint search party of police and Rashtriya Rifles at Chorkhan Nallah in Kandi area of Kupwara district last night, a police spokesman said.

Some arms and ammunition were recovered from the possession of the slain militant, he said adding, the search in the area was still continuing when last reports were received this afternoon.

In another successful operation, police assisted by army shot dead a hardcore militant of LeT outfit at Peer Mohalla in Pulwama district yesterday, the spokesman said.

Shabir Ahmad Bhat alias Mansoor, a resident of Chakura village, was wanted in a large number of militancy-related incidents over the past couple of years, the spokesman said.

He said Bhat had crossed over to Pakistan in 2001 for arms training and returned in October 2006.

The spokesman said the body of a 50-year-old woman was recovered from Marazi Gund Dal in Baramulla district last evening. The identity of the deceased could not be established immediately as her head was devoured by wild animals, he said adding, police have registered a case and started investigations to ascertain the cause of her death.
