Army soldiers cordoned off Boru village and launched a search operation on Monday night after receiving a tip that terrorists were hiding there, said local police chief Ashiq Bukhari. Early on Tuesday the terrorists were found in a house and a fierce gunbattle followed in which two terrorists were killed and a policeman wounded, he said.

Boru village is 30 kilometers (20 miles) northwest of Srinagar. Bukhari identified one of the suspected rebels as Mohammad Ashraf, a local leader of Hezb-ul-Mujahedeen. He said that Ashraf had been active for the last decade.

A spokesman for the terrorist group could not immediately be reached for confirmation.

Police said they recovered some arms and ammunition from the gunbattle site.

However, there was no immediate independent confirmation of the incident.
