Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Jagdish Tytler was on Saturday granted bail by a Delhi court in a case of making alleged derogatory remarks against the lawyer of 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims in TV news programmes.
"Accused Tytler is admitted on bail on furnishing of a personal and surety bond of Rs 50,000 each as the condition," Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ajay Panday said after Tytler appeared before the court.
The court also exempted Tytler from personal appearance till the disposal of his application seeking permanent exemption from court appearances.
The court was hearing a defamation case filed by Harvinder Singh Phoolka, a senior advocate, who has spearheaded a legal battle on behalf of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims.
Kamna Vohra, appearing for Phoolka, opposed Tytler's plea seeking permanent exemption from appearances before the court.
"The matter has been transferred from Ludhiana court to the capital on the request of Tytler himself. Now he cannot seek exemption from appearance," she submitted.
Phoolka had in 2004 filed the case at the Ludhiana court against Tytler accusing him of making defamatory remarks in programmes telecast on NDTV news channel on September seven in the same year.
