Kolkata-based United Bank of India has promoted two of its officers with CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) charges to their next levels. As per the human resource policy, public sector banks are not permitted to promote its officers with CBI charges. In a response to a question raised by Right to Information (RTI) activist JS Bhattacharjee under the RTI Act, the bank confirmed the development stating that the promotions took place between 2001 and 2012. However, Bhattacharjee said that the bank took over a year to provide him the relevant information.
UBI chairman and managing director Bhaskar Sen could not be contacted for comment as he was travelling.
A senior official in the ministry of finance, who did not wish to be identified, told HT that there could be “several hundred” officers in public sector banks who have been charge sheeted by the CBI.
“The finance ministry should take up the issue, particularly in this case so as to bring in transparency and uniformity in the service conditions for the public sector bank employees in the country,” Bhattacharjee said.
