Opposition leader in the Kerala assembly, VS Achuthanandan, on Tuesday said that the ruling United Democratic Front was on the 'verge of disaster' and virtually invited second-rung leaders in the Front, dissatisfied with its functioning, to work for a restructuring of Kerala politics.
"We do not want the BJP-led NDA to take advantage of the UDF's weakness. NDA is not going to be allowed to open its account in Kerala. Certain discussions are on with those dissatisfied with the goings-on in the Congress and UDF to help the Left Front in future," he told reporters here.
He said the Congress was now not banking on its traditional sources of strength, but on money power and policies pursued by forces of globalisation and imperialism. A restructuring exercise in the UDF was likely to come from within, as even leaders like former Union Minister KP Unnikrishnan had started criticising the leadership in the state.
The LDF was ready to accommodate 'friends' from the UDF who were secular and adopted a stance against globalisation and corruption in administration. They should be committed and prepared to work for the interests of the people.
Achuthanandan said the recently arranged patch-up between senior leader K Karunakaran and Chief Minister AK Antony had confused and divided the party's rank and file. Even community based organisations like NSS and SNDP had started distancing themselves from the UDF, he said.
