UGC sanctions 72 new teaching posts for AU

THE UNIVERSITY Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned 72 new faculty positions for the Allahabad University (AU). With the sanction of these posts, the acute shortage of teachers, the AU was facing for the past two decades, will come to an end. AU Vice-chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe visited New Delhi on May 19 in connection with the sanctioning of 72 new posts.

THE UNIVERSITY Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned 72 new faculty positions for the Allahabad University (AU).

With the sanction of these posts, the acute shortage of teachers, the AU was facing for the past two decades, will come to an end. AU Vice-chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe visited New Delhi on May 19 in connection with the sanctioning of 72 new posts. Now, the strength of teachers in the university will go up to 612 from 540.

The 72 faculty positions, sanctioned by the UGC, include 11 posts of professors, 17 posts of readers and 44 posts of lecturers. The new disciplines, for which the posts have been sanctioned, include Biotechnology, bio-informatics, environmental sciences, atmospheric and ocean sciences, food technology, physical education , sociology, globalisation, development studies, material science, behavioural and cognitive sciences and school of languages that the varsity is planning to set up.

“After the sanction of 72 new posts and a sum of Rs 40.05 crore for 2006-07, we are now waiting for the new ordinances to take shape and Visitor nominees to be appointed for the colleges so that recruitment for these new posts and for 168 vacant posts can be started at the earliest,” Prof Harshe said.
