Studying in private deemed universities could be cheaper as the apex varsity body plans to come up with a mechanism to streamline the fee structure for professional courses in such institutes.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is setting up a committee to study the prevailing fee structure in the private deemed universities and recommend a uniform structure for them, UGC sources said.
It would also study the admission process and recommend a uniform admission policy.
The move comes in the backdrop of complaints received by the Commission about the "astronomical" rise in fee structure in these universities over the last few years.
"These deemed universities are not under the control of the state governments. Though UGC has prescribed fee for different courses, these institutions do not follow the same," the sources said.
"For the last two/three years, the fee structure has doubled in some specific institutions. We have got complaints in this regard," they said.
As per the prescribed annual fee structure, the private deemed universities and private unaided institutions should charge Rs 40,000 for bachelor and master programmes in engineering, technology, architecture; Rs 50,000 for MBA; Rs one lakh for BDS and Rs 1.3 lakh for MBBS, MD, MDS and MS.

There are 102 private deemed universities in the country of which about 60 are in the private sector.
