UGC to issue strict measures against ragging

In the aftermath of the shocking death of a medical student due to ragging in Himachal Pradesh, UGC has decided to issue stringent regulations to prevent such acts in future in educational institutions. The regulations are likely to be finalised by the first week of April, an UGC official said.

The regulations are likely to be finalised by the first week of April, an UGC official said.

"The commission has also decided to have wider consultation with other statutory bodies like AICTE, DCI, NCTE, PCI and Medical Council of India," he said.

Besides, it would convene a meeting of these bodies along with chairmen of the state councils of higher education and state education secretaries as all of them have an important role in prevention of ragging in institutes of higher education, he said.

The death of Aman Satya Kachru (19), a first-year student of Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College in Kangra last week had sent shock waves across the country.

Three days later, an agriculture student in Andhra Pradesh allegedly tried to commit suicide after reportedly being forced to dance nude by her seniors.
