Ujjal Dosanjh

The first Indo-Canadian Premier of British Columbia. Pravasi Bharatiya Samman

Ujjal Dosanjh was sworn in as British Columbia's 33rd Premier on February 24, 2000. He is Canada's first Indo-Canadian Premier. He had previously served as Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism, Immigration and Human Rights; Minister of Government Services; and Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism, Human Rights, Sports and Immigration.

Mr. Dosanjh was born in India in 1947, the year the country achieved independence. He emigrated to England at the age of 17, and four years later, to Canada. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Simon Fraser University, followed by a law degree from the University of British Columbia. In 1979, Mr. Dosanjh established a law practice in Vancouver.

A long-time human rights activist, his past community involvements include: South Vancouver Neighbourhood House, MOSAIC, the B.C. Multicultural Society and the B.C. Civil Liberties Association.
