A high-level Indian business team is set to meet with British ministers and industry leaders on Wednesday amid growing complaints that efforts to boost manufacturing ties are running up against British reluctance to share cutting-edge technologies.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) team led by Tata Steel vice-chairman B Muthuraman will meet UK business secretary Vince Cable for talks aimed at forging greater partnerships in manufacturing — a move that could strengthen a failing British sector.
The team of 16 business honchos also includes Godrej group chairman Adi Godrej, Punj Lloyd chairman Atul Punj, Nicco Corp chairman Rajiv Kaul and Tata Communications chairman Subodh Bhargava.The talks will focus on ways to bring about a "step change" in the two countries’ manufacturing relationship through innovative partnerships. How to share British-owned high-end technology with Indian manufacturers will be a key component of the talks.
Typically, British industries cite a lax intellectual property rights (IPR) regime in India to hold back sharing technologies.
But Indian companies claim that India enjoys an intellectual property regime that is at par with the global framework and enforcement is strong. In particular, Indians give the example of the software industry, where they say IPR regulations have been strictly adhered to, helping build a “strong credibility” for Indian firms.
