In view of the increasing crimes and suicide bids in the metro rail, the West Bengal government is seeking help from a British NGO to train personnel into better management of the underground transport system.
The Civil Defence department of the state government will sign an MoU with a UK-based NGO next week to train 20 metro railway officers in disaster management.
State Civil Defence Minister Sreekumar Mukherjee told reporters at the secretariat that the training would be conducted in phases at the Central Civil Defence Training Institute and will take in more personnel in future.
This will be the first programme of its kind in India.
"We have had a discussion with the head of the NGO Sharon Neilson, who will fashion the three-hour training programme for a month daily," he said.
The programme was implemented in London after a militant attack on some of its tube railway stations some time back.
