The ULFA has called upon the Centre to create a 'level-playing field' for direct talks and ensure a proper atmosphere for talks by releasing the five jailed central executive committee members of the outlawed outfit.

The ULFA, in an editorial in the latest edition of its mouthpiece 'Freedom', urged the government to create an air of trust and "show eagerness for talks by creating a level-playing field where the issue of Assam's sovereignty can be discussed."

"The government must create a proper atmosphere for talks by releasing the jailed central committee members of the outfit and provide information about ULFA members missing since the Bhutan operations in 2003," the editorial said.

The government must desist from spreading rumours against ULFA and only then would a level-playing field be created.

The editorial pointed out that after the third round of talks with the Peoples' Consultative Group (PCG) and the Centre, a joint statement was issued where the government had assured that the five jailed ULFA leaders would be released and both sides had agreed to create a congenial atmosphere.
