The Supreme Court judgment on the Bihar assembly dissolution should be an eye-opener for politicians and the public (Buta guilty, Jan. 25). The apex court’s observation and its indictment against Governor Buta Singh is in the interest of our country and the democracy it practises. Both the Union of ministers as well as the Bihar governor are at fault.

Their inability to keep democracy on track is unpardonable and they cannot go scot-free. Wasting taxpayers’ money for imposing fresh elections cannot be the way out every time.

It is unfortunate that instead of accepting the judgment with dignity, Buta Singh is contemplating to defy and ignore the comments made by the apex court. One would expect that the prime minister will recall Buta Singh without any further delay.

With the Supreme Court verdict stating that the dissolution of the Bihar assembly was mala fide and was to Nitish Kumar to form a government, justice has been done. Buta Singh’s report was not verified by the Council of Ministers before it was hastily acted upon. This resulted in fresh elections. The point is: who will bear the huge election expenses incurred due to this kind of politics? And what steps are being taken to stop such shenanigans in the future?

The court decision forces us to change the law for appointment of governors. We should elect governors for fixed terms. Appointed governors exist at the mercy of the Centre. The elected governor will act in the interest of the people, state and the country.

Fans or fanatics?
This has reference to the report Missing cricket fans behind B’lore terror? (January 23). There are serious concerns which arise over our security and vigilance. Now the cricket series has become an annual affair between India and Pakistan. The concerned authorities and our security agencies must make appropriate investigations while scrutinising visa applications of cricket fans if we need to secure our country.
