People living near the ancient Borobudur Temple in Magelang district, Central Java, have requested the UNESCO to conduct research on ground water conditions in the temple area.
"We have resquested UNESCO to send experts to do research on the water resources near Borobudur Temple," Priyoto, coordinator of the Borobudur Care Association (BCA), said here.
He pointed out limited water resource was making agriculture difficult in the area, depriving a large number of people of their source of livelihood.
He pointed out that indiscriminate tree-felling was one of the factors causing limited water catchment.
"The water issue was also the main topic discussed at the International Experts Meeting on Borobudur 2003", Priyoto, one of the meeting participants, said and added that UNESCO has given an assurance that it would send its expert team in the near future.
Most of temples were built near water resources, which was of significance both for local people and temples' conservation, Priyoto added.
