Unprotected sex accounts for an alarming number of AIDS cases in Assam, a leading NGO dealing with the deadly disease has found.
The Assam State AIDS Control Society in a recent study has found that the highest number of AIDS cases fall in the sexual transmission category.
The number of AIDS cases due to unprotected sex stands at 660 which is a whopping 82.29 per cent of the total 802 AIDS cases reported in the state till September 2008.
The NGO has found that unprotected sex is on the rise despite the implementation of several blood safety programmes to educate people in the 21 districts of the state.
Dr S A Ahmed, heading the NGO, says the society was taking steps for preventive interventions for general population through blood safety programmes, low cost care for people with HIV/AIDS, institutional strengthening of surveillance and inter sector collaboration.
The study claims that the state has fallen short of basic minimum infrastructure to fight the killer disease including the viral load count equipment which is needed to detect the virus.
