The wife of an additional district judge here, divorced through triple talaq, has approached the chief justices of high court and Supreme Court, terming the divorce as illegal.
Mohd Zahiruddin Siddiqui, 59, is posted here as additional district judge-1 (ADJ-1) and lives in Judges Compound at Lal Diggi. He is a native of Jaunpur and has two sons and a daughter, all of them grown up. After the death of his wife in 2014, he married Afshan Begum, 48, of Damdama locality, Qayamganj (Farukhabad ) in 2015.
Afshan told HT, “My elder sister is married in Aligarh. My marriage with Mohd. Zahiruddin Siddiqui took place through an advocate known to my sister. However, after some time the behaviour of my husband changed and he started taunting me. On February 7, my husband called my elder sister to complain about me. At that time, his sons were also present. There were heated arguments over some issues and my husband divorced me by pronouncing triple talaq in a fit of anger.”
In her complaint sent to the chief justices of Supreme Court and high court, Afshan has said that the divorce is not legal. “How can a person holding a judicial post divorce his wife by pronouncing triple talaq?” she questioned.
She has said that the ADJ should withdraw it. Many attempts were made to contact Mohd. Zahiruddin Siddiqui, ADJ(1) but he made no comment. Social analyst N Jamal Ansari told HT, “Pronouncing talaq thrice at one time in one sitting is totally against Islamic sanction but it has gained recognition in Indian society. The practice should be discontinued. Apart from being un-Islamic, it also subjects women to gender injustice and bias.”
