The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) on Saturday made a record purchase of 43 million units (MU) of power to tide over an unprecedented crisis gripping the country’s most populous state.

The purchase came a day after the corporation had procured 39 MU on Friday from the national energy exchange in a bid to narrow down the demand-supply gap in the state.

Saturday’s purchase enabled the UPPCL to meet the requirement – though not fully – on Sunday but sources said that the corporation may not be able to continue this arrangement given its precarious financial health.

The state faced a peak-time shortage of 3,835 MW on Friday forcing the UPPCL to resort to emergency rostering to the extent that power supply to district towns and villages was reduced to just 10 hours and four hours, respectively, or even less.

The extreme situation has generated a lot of hue and cry with even ruling party MLAs and MPs complaining to chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.
