Ahmed, a five-time MLA from Phulpur in Allahabad, has 169 criminal cases against him, including the gunning down of BSP MLA Raju Pal in January 2005.

After the Delhi Police announced his arrest on Friday and produced him before the chief metropolitan magistrate's court, he was granted transit remand for being produced before a designated court in Allahabad within two days.

The MP, who has been absconding for quite some time, also referred to his long political rivalry with UP Chief Minister Mayawati, saying she had openly declared him as her enemy.

In the district police records he is listed as leader of an inter-state gang of dacoits. His younger brother and former MLA from the Samajwadi Party, Khalid Azeem alias Ashraf and nephew Hamza had been declared by police as members of Atiq's gang. They too are evading arrest.
