For the first time, the seven prisons in the state have begun a UP-board examination centre for the inmates who wish to appear for the class X and XII exams, state officials said.

“Apart form Ghaziabad, these inmates have come from Meerut, Saharanpur, Muzaffar Nagar and Bulandshahr districts to appear at the nodal Dasna jail examination centre,” said Dasna Jail Superintendent V.K. Singh.

At all seven centers, 31 male and 15 female inmates have filled up their examination-forms for class X and XII after having decided to continue with their studies which were previously hindered due to captivity, lack of funds or other problems.

Dasna Superintendent V.K. Singh said that apart from getting a separate centre, the students’ mindset has changed.

Additional Director General/ IG (Prisons) Sulkhan Singh said funds for the forms, books and other material were provided by the Jail. “The proposal was approved in May 2009 and 15 women inmates have also appeared for the exams. Even the Basic education board has also conducted the exams,” IG (Prisons) said.
