The sequence of events as narrated by the families of the two minor cousins who were gang-raped and murdered in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh, might not be the only basis on which the probe is launched, sources said.

“There are a few questions left unanswered in the version told by the families. It is possible they feel threatened and do not want to give us what exactly happened that night. Therefore, we have formed six teams to probe all leads and even the theories put forward by the residents of Katra Sadatganj, where the incident took place,” a senior police official requesting anonymity told Hindustan Times.

According to the father of one of the victims, around 8pm on May 27, a witness Babu Ram saw the two minor girls being dragged away by the main accused, Pappu, and his three associates. Babu Ram claims that he informed the family and they all started looking for the girls, but after a three hour search, at around 11pm they went to the police to file a complaint.

The official pointed out that we need to know as to why was the prime accused at home if he had committed the rapes and murders. Investigators have said that knowing the exact time of death will help clear many things as if the girls died after 11pm then Pappu, the main accused so far could not have committed the crime as he was at the police post.

The bodies were sent for a post-mortem, conducted by a panel of three doctors. Their report has been sent to the forensic laboratory in Lucknow for the opinion on exact time of death.

“We also need to know if anyone else was involved in the crime and whether they were killed somewhere else and then hanged at the tree,” he added.
