The Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) has directed its affiliated colleges to include an anti-ragging clause in their admission brochures and ensure ragging does not take place in their institutions. Greater Noida has over 50 colleges affiliated to the University.
The University circular dated April 15 states: “In every admission prospectus, it shall be clearly stated that if any incident of ragging comes to the notice of the authority, the student concerned shall be given liberty to explain. If his explanation is not found satisfactory, the authority will expel him from the institution”.
University Registrar U.S. Tomer told HT: “To curb the menace of ragging as per the Supreme Court’s directions and recommendations of the Raghavan Committee, we have directed our affiliated colleges to include the anti-ragging clause in their admission brochures.”
Tomer said the committee felt that the primary responsibility to curb ragging rested with academic institutions. “Behavioural patterns among students, particularly potential ‘raggers’, need to be identified,” he said.
Greater Noida Engineering & Management Institutes Association representative Dr. D.K. Garg – who is also chairman of the Ishan Institute of Management Technology – said: “Institutes have formed anti-ragging committees. Colleges will implement the UPTU directive. Several colleges have asked students to sign an anti-ragging affidavit at the time of admission so that when they become seniors next year, they do not resort to ragging.”
