Villagers protesting against cow slaughter clashed with policemen in Dharsawa village in Shravasti district, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday. Agitators damaged police vehicles and blocked the movement of traffic on India- Nepal Buddhist circuit road.

Villagers alleged that they lodged complaint about theft of their cattle in the police station, but no action was taken against the culprits.

On Monday morning, the carcass of the cattle was found lying in a field — following which there was clash between the members of two communities.

The incident, which came close on the heels of the Saharanpur communal clashes and a day ahead of Eid, gave the administration the jitters.

District magistrate Nikhil Chandra Shukla and superintendent of police Salikram Verma rushed to the spot with extra police force and brought the situation under control. villagers withdrew their agitation. Police registered an FIR against.
