A woman in eastern Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district was killed by two men she confronted for illegally felling trees.

The suspects in the case are related to the victim, who was identified as 60-year-old Bela Devi. The incident took place in Ghazipur’s Nauli village, where Devi was active in taking up social issues.

Police officials arrested accused Ajay Singh while another accused, Santosh Singh, is still at large.

Ravetipur station officer Praveen Yadav said: “An FIR has been lodged against the accused. Testimony of the woodcutter, who was present at the spot when Devi was killed, is being taken.”

A first information report (FIR) was lodged by Anup Singh, the deceased’s son, who named Ajay and Santosh.

On Sunday evening, according to the report, Devi got information about felling of two Mahua (Madhuca longifolia) trees at Dahura Bari area, a few metres from her house.

She reached the site soon and opposed the operation, entering into a heated exchange of words with Santosh and Ajay, who had hired one Jamshed to cut the trees.
