Sri Lanka view Upul Chandana as a hard-hitting lower order batsman who can be asked to bowl a full spell of 10 overs. Chandana's career started to blossom only in 2002 when he was asked to captain Sri Lanka A against Kenya.

Unfortunately, he's been in and out of the national squad and his strongest bid for a permanent place in the team can be because of his fielding - he is arguably the best in the side.

Also, in the one-dayers, his explosive ability in the middle order can prove a real asset. The absence of Muralitharan from the Lankan side touring Australia before the Asia Cup worked in his favour. His abilities were tested and he fared well. So much so that by the end of the Asia Cup earlier this year he had become an important wicket-taker for Sri Lanka.
