The United States has condemned the Karachi blast that killed at least 55 people and injured many others on Tuesday on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed.

"We strongly condemn this attack and can see no conceivable justification for this atrocity," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said at the daily press briefing.
The bombing was the deadliest in Pakistan in nearly two decades and sparked fears of new sectarian violence between majority Sunnis and Pakistan's minority Shiite community.
