US lawmakers welcome Indo-US nuke accord

The lawmakers warmly welcomed the path-breaking Indo-US pact and assured India of continued support.

Hailing the Indo-US accord on the transfer of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, a large number of US lawmakers warned that a similar accord with Pakistan should be examined closely in view of Islamabad's unacceptable track record vis-a-vis nuclear proliferation.

Attending the annual legislative convention of the Indian American Friendship Council (IFAC), one of the most influential Indian-American think-tank in America, the lawmakers warmly welcomed the path-breaking Indo-US pact and assured India of continued support.

The convention this week, dubbed as the largest Indian American event on Capitol Hill, was attended by as many as 112 lawmakers representing the Senate and Congress.

The event held this year in the backdrop of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's meeting with President George W. Bush, saw widespread support for India as Congressional members promised to help the Indian American cause.

President Bush sent his best wishes to the convention, saying: "For generations, Indian Americans have contributed to the vitality, success and prosperity of our nation. Your organization's work supports this important community and has helped foster relationships between the United States and India."

Several Senators including Ben Nelson, Ken Salazar, Paul Sarbanes, Saxby Chambliss and Senator Thomas Carper attended the two-day event.
