The President, George W Bush and some others in the White House have come to see the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as a potential Adolf Hitler. "That's the name they're using," the report in the latest issue of The New Yorker said quoting a former intelligence official.

Citing an unnamed Pentagon advisor, the report makes the point that the White House has come to the conclusion that the only way to solve the problem in Iran is change the power structure in that country "and that means war".

According to a former defence official, cited in the report, a sustained bombing campaign in Iran against a list of hundreds of identified targets will humiliate the religious leadership leading to a public revolt.

"Current and former American military and intelligence officials said that Air Force planning groups are drawing up lists of targets, and teams of American combat troops have been ordered into Iran, under cover, to collect targeting data and to establish contact with anti-government ethnic minority groups. The officials say that President Bush is determined to deny the Iranian regime the opportunity to begin a pilot program, planned for this spring, to enrich uranium," the report adds.
