Observing that there has been outstanding cooperation between the Indian and US governments on the issue of prompting Nepal to get back to the democratic path, visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said, at a joint press meet after talks with External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh, "that is something that must happen and we are in complete agreement that it needs to happen very soon".

Singh said the two sides agreed that the recent events in Nepal were a setback to democracy and that reconciliation among political parties must lead to the return of multi-party democracy.

New Delhi has voiced strong concern over King Gyanendra's decision on February 1 to dismiss the Dueba Government, declare emergency, detain political leaders and impose censorship on the media.
