APPLICATION of the latest technology in transmission and distribution of power and better utilisation of the available power system was the conclusion of the scientists and experts who delivered around two dozen papers in the two -day national seminar on Electric Power Technology Management and Information Technology Applications organised by the Department of Electrical Engineering at Madan Mohan Malviya Engineering College here.
They said the application of various suitable theories could reduce the burden of transmission and distribution systems. Member of the Institution of Engineers Jaikishan Singh said that after independence, the demand for electricity in UP had increased rapidly due to increase in population, industrialisation and electrification of railway tracks etc. He said the generating capacity could not rise in proportion to the genuine demand, which created a wide gap between demand and supply of power.
He said that at present the 1482 MW unit at Obra, 242 MW unit at Panki, 425 MW at Harduaganj, 225 MW at Parichha, and 1130 MW thermal power station at Rihand were working. The average life of a thermal power unit was 25 years and operation of very old thermal hydropower units had resulted in lower generation of electricity, he said.
The participants said the power flow pattern in transmission network may change in such a way that there may be a serious challenge in operation of the power system. In such a situation, flexible AC transmission system could play a very important role in improving the power system, but such devices needed to be located optimally.

{{/usCountry}}They described various techniques for identifying line outage, which they said might be vulnerable to voltage stability. They also focussed on design operation and control of large-scale power systems with interconnection of sophisticated operational strategies, reliability and safety concerns.
